at what age should kids walk themselves to school?
Just had a bit of a disagreement with the other half .

Her kids school is 150 meters from her house and she pays a child minder to walk her there

The kid is 8 years old and the school is in the highams park bit of E17

I'm sure I walked to school younger than 8

Thoughts?

My boys got about a quarter of a mile to walk, it's all on the same housing estate and he walks with a friend which he started doing at 8 years old.

Sign of the times, with the media almost daily running story’s on the latest Nonce case hardly surprising parents have reservations about letting kids walk to school.

Sad though, when I was a kid, seemed we all walked to school come rain, hail or shine, these days most roads around schools are in grid lock come school start and finish times with all the parents/carers picking up/dropping off.

You should be aware of paedos, Islamists, blacks with knives, druggies, groomers and fundamentalists.

When i was younger my old dear would set my casio watch for 5:30pm. And would say i need to be back in the house when the alarm goes off. I'd be out all day on a saturday.

Nowadays, i dont let my kids play in the road without me being out there.

Indicative of todays society im afraid.

Saying that though, kids are more likely to be abused IN school judging by the amount of predators in the teaching profession nowadays...

No you should always drive your kids to school in a big off road vehicle which you use just for taking them to school or going to the shops.

If they don't need to cross roads and there's a nice group of relatively sensible children walking together it would seem allright? Also a lot better in warmer, lighter months for some reason? Drizzly dark winter mornings are a bit shit for a little fella on their own.

In the nicest possible way, Joe, he's HER son and it's her call.

The nonce count is probably the same per capita as it was thirty to forty years ago. Traffic however is far far heavier, & that is the real issue. My 7 year old daughter was allowed to go on the bus, with her older brother, to school 18 months ago. One day i got a call from her teacher saying that she had been seen running out in front of a car which screeched to a halt. This was after 4-5 weeks of no incidents. Back to the school run immediately.

Same age as they start touching themself. Normally about the same age that Milhouse starts touching them.

I live not far from highams park, would not let an 8 year old walk to school by themselves

Children up to secondary school should be escorted by their parents.
Lazy parents rather watch Jeremy Kyle than get off their arse and take their children to school.

11 if the school is very nearby. I have to face this in September when I will have to get my nine yr old to primary, and 11 year old to secondary, at the moment they get driven in or walk with the cylinder when I am uni early. Would not feel happy about them walking in at 8.
